Final: Should Art be Censored

Censorship is a challenging topic in many areas. Art is a major area where censorship can be very challenging issue. I believe that censorship needs to be discussed in every area, but I also feel that it should not be able to control every piece of art that is viewed. I think that if someone doesn't want to look at a piece of controversial art, then don't look at it. If someone wants to express him or herself through art, they should be allowed to do so, even if it might offend someone else. Everyone has the choice whether to take part in things or to even look at things, so for me censorship should still be around for extreme measures in things like television and movies, but art should be able to be expressed as someone may want.

Final: Evidence of Female Archetypal Patterns

Women can be very confusing and irrational in nature, but that's who we are. These female archetypal types that were discussed show the patterns of how women tend to be characterized. I believe that these archetypal types can be found everywhere. For one, they are very evident in literature. Any book that contains a drama over a man or woman usually holds a few characters that fit the female archetypal types. Female archetypal patterns can also be found in movies and the theater. Movies really show how women can be characterized by these patterns. I think that television also hold these female archetypal types, as well. The most evident area where female archetypal patterns can be found is in our everyday society. Practically every woman fits into one or more of these categories almost everyday of their lives.

Final: Controversial Art

Art is art no matter how or who looks at it. For some, art can be looking at a beautiful spring morning, while others think of art as being a little more darker and more personal. Controversial art is a sub-section of art, and at times it is look at as the black sheep of the family. Although controversial art can be very debatable at times, I strongly believe that it is one's choice whether to create a piece of controversial art or even look at a controversial art piece. So I feel that the purpose of this type of art is freedom of expression. If someone wants to create something that expresses who he or she is and tells how he or she feels, it is their right to do so.

Final: Most Important Function of Art

Art has many functions, but one sticks out in my mind. I believe that art most necessary function is serving as a form of expression. In our society today, there are few ways where one can express his or her feelings without having it altered by the media or advertisements. I think that art is a wonderful way for someone to really express themselves emotionally and intellectually. Art is very important in many ways, but without the art of expression, what would art really mean, but just some picture that no one cared about.

Final: Critiquing, Reviewing, Analyzing Art

I think that by critiquing and reviewing art, one can gain a tremendous amount of insight. For the art reviews that I have done for this class, I have really been able to to look deeper into the meaning of the specific piece. I find that with art sometimes I just glance over it, but by analyzing it, I have really enjoyed fully understanding art. I think that by critiquing art it helps one understand it and develop his or her own opinions on the work. Critiquing art also can help you organize your thoughts and feelings about a piece of art.

Female Archetypes : Week 15

For the archetype of Earth, I chose to use Susan Sarandon's character in "Stepmom." She plays a mother of two who is battling cancer. All the while her ex-husband is in a new relationship with another, younger woman. this woman is trying to connect with the kids, and Susan's character takes it as stepping on her toes. Susan's character is very wise and acts like the foundation for everyone in the movie, even though she has her own very serious personal challenge. She makes sure everything is functionally correctly.
For the archetype of Water, I chose Julia Robert's character from "My Best Friend's Wedding." She plays a head strong best friend who is secretly in love with her best friend, which is a man. The problem is that he is engaged to be married to another woman. Julia spends most of the movie trying to spilt them apart, but in the end she sheds some tears and lets him go to be happy.
For the archetype of Wind, I chose Sally Field's character form the movie "Steel Magnolias." She plays the overbearing mother who gets in everyone's business. Although almost everyone in the family hates the fact that she is the way she is, they all know that without her love and devotion for them, they wouldn't be the happy, successful, and strong family that they are.
For the archetype of Fire, I chose Meryl Streep's character in the movie, "Death Becomes Her." She plays a woman who is so caught up in her appearance that she ends up taking things to extreme levels. She tries to get back at her long time rival, but because they have both drank an immorality treatment, never one can die. They go on hurting and trying to kill each other until they realize that things will never be the same.

Music Review

For me, music is my favorite source of entertainment. I could sit and listen to music all day long is I was able to. I think that is why I like to travel so much, because the radio is always there. For this art review, I was required to choose a piece of music to discuss. I enjoy listening to all genres of music, but my absolute preference would have to be country. I like listening to the happy and the sad aspects of country music. Sometimes I can be listening to a song and just break out in tears or that song will take to back to a specific memory.
I decided on a love song for this review. Just like many other women, I am a sucker for a good love song. The song I chose is by Travis Tritt and it is titled, "Drift Off to Dream." This song means a lot to me personally, and I believe that is why I decided on using this song. Travis Tritt is considered an older performer, mainly because he hasn't released much in the last few years, but I love his classic stuff, especially his slow, sad ones.
This particular song is about a man who is searching for that special one. It starts out with him sitting by himself at a bar wondering if and when he might find his soul mate. I can tell that he is really wanting to find her, although he might appear to just be hanging out with buddies having a good time until she just shows up. The chorus is my favorite part of this song, because I can picture the perfect couple going through the motions and falling in love forever. The chorus talks about and evening when they are together just laying beneath the stars. The last line of the chorus is"Til you drift off to dream in my arms." This line is awesome, because who doesn't want to drift off to dream in the arms of the person who loves you. I know I love it.
The next verse goes back to him talking about how long it might take for him to find her and what will happen when they meet. He says that no matter when or where that she will hear this love song, which is what he refers to as the chorus. Chorus comes again and the last line of the entire song is "Til you drift off to dream in my arms."
I love this song, because although you know that he isn't in love at the time, he truly wants to be and has this perfect image of what their love will be. I know love isn't always perfect, but I can't help but want to go through an evening like the chorus of this song every night with the person I love.

Controversial Art

I believe that art is art no matter what someone might have to say negative about a piece. Controversial art should have the same rights as one of the works that is considered great art. In my opinion, controversial art might not be for my entertainment, but it might be for someone else. I know that there has to be a line drawn between what is just controversial art and what is plain obscenity. As I researched this topic, I found many articles and images of controversial art. I will admit that there may have been one or two websites that I just couldn't look at, but the majority of it didn't make me feel like I was going to be damned for life for looking at it. To me, the most interesting part of controversial art, is getting to know the artist and finding out the reasons for the piece and what the piece is supposed to portray to its audience. Some artists may push the envelope with some works, but what kind of entertain now-a-days doesn't push the envelope. It is hard for me to believe that controversial art can be looked at being so awful, when some video games, movies, and television, in my opinion are worse. Controversial art serves the function just like any other kind of art. It can enhance its audience and hopefully reach its audience in a meaningful way.

Functions of Art / Week 11

Art serves a physical function.: Works of art can be created to be performed.

Art can be a form of self-expression.: An artist can create something that he or she wants to communicate to the audience.

Art can be entertaining.: Pieces of art may be created to be enjoyment for the artist and the viewer.

Art can serve a religious function.

Art can be a way for someone to deal and cope with something that is going on in their lives. It can serve as an escape or retreat for them.

Week 10: Symbolism in Religious Art

I wanted to take full advantage of this assignment. I have never been a very faithful church goer and have never really learned too much of the particulars of my religion. So i decided to take a closer look at the symbolism found in Christianity. Religious symbolism is the use of symbols, including archetypes, acts, artwork, events, or natural phenomena. The symbols help express the moral values of the society, the teachings of the religion, creates a sense of solidarity between religious adherents, or functions as a way to bring an adherent closer to God.
For much of Christian art color plays a main role. Although symbolic colors are rarely used in the Bible.
Black is symbolic of death and is the symbolic color for Good Friday. Black can also represent sin, which results in death. Blue, the color of the sky, is symbolic of heaven. It may also be used to symbolize truth. Brown is the color of spiritual death and degradation. Gray is the color of ash, so is sometimes used to represent repentance and may be used during Lent. Green is the color of plant life, abundant in spring. It is used to represent the triumph of life over death. Purple is the color for penitence and mourning. It is also the color of royalty. Red is the color of blood. It is also the color of fire. White is a symbol of purity, innocence, and holiness. It represents Christmas and Easter seasons. Yellow may be used to represent divinity. However, because yellow light is not pure white, it may also be used to symbolize corruption and degradation.
Each masterpiece of Christian art usually presents symbolism native to that religious sect.
Symbolism is important to any type of art, but in relation to religion, symbolism is vital to the interpretation of the art work.

Creative Asssignment

For this week's assignment I decided to do something creative. My home town's boys basketball team has had a truly great tournament run. I am from Oak Hill, and our boys basketball hasn't been doing well the past five or six years. But this year things have been turned around. Norm Persin became our head coach this year and the boys have been doing great. I have a brother who is a sophomore starter on the team. This week they will be playing in the District Championship. In Oak Hill's school history only two other teams have made it that far in the tournament. We will play Fairland. So for my creative assignment I took part with other mothers and family members, we all made signs and feed the boys steaks. We had a celebration party for them. Balloons, signs, treat bags, games, the whole nine yards. I know my creative activity isn't very elaborate, but it meant the world to me.

Art Review #3/ Film Choice

Art Review #3/ Film Choice

Whitney Hale

Fine Arts 10503

Joseph Campbell first discussed the Mythic and Archetypal principles embedded in the structure of stories. Over many years, these steps of the “Journey” and the characters involved have been adopted into many movie storylines. I believe that these principles can be found in many movies, but I have chosen an excellent film to relate these characters and steps to. The Shawshank Redemption practically goes step by step and has very character archetype incorporated into its storyline.
The Shawshank Redemption is a movie about the integrity of Andy Dufresne, who also plays the Hero in this movie. Andy is an individual of integrity among a host of criminals in a state prison who have very little integrity. Andy goes through this story meeting friends and foes and finds the strength and determination to deal with both. One of the most vital people that Andy meets is Ellis “Red” Redding. Red, who fits the part of the Mentor, proves to be a remarkable companion for Andy.
The Threshold Guardian in The Shawshank Redemption is the poor inmate named Brooks Hatlen. Brooks’ parole gets approved but doesn’t want to leave the prison, so he threatens to kill another inmate in order to stay. Andy convinces him to let the other man go, and Brooks is released. Another important character is Tommy Williams, who plays the part of the Herald. Tommy is the boy who Andy helps get his G.E.D., but Tommy also gives Andy some important information. I believe that this information issues a challenge for Andy and announces some pretty significant events.
The Shapeshifter in this movie would have to be Captain Bryon Hadley. He misleads Andy by beating him up at the beginning, but as the story progresses, Hadley reaches out for Andy’s help. Warden Sam Norton plays the Shadow. Although Norton uses Andy for his expertise, he won’t ever allow him any extra ground. He wants to keep Andy right under his thumb. I believe the Trickster in this movie would have to be Bogs Diamond. He is the bully around the prison and leads the toughest gangs, the “Sisters”.
The Twelve Stages if the Journey that Andy’s passes through are some tough and unbearable situations. Andy’s “Ordinary World” would be when he was at home with his wife and living his life as a banker. But after the discovery of his wife with her lover, Andy begins on his “Call to Adventure”. I believe this stage happens when Andy was on trial for the murders of his wife and her lover. He was in the stage of “Refusal of the Call” when he tries to claim that he is innocent of the charges. In spite of the overwhelming evidence, Andy is sent to prison to serve two life sentences.
The “Meeting with the Mentor” takes place when Andy and Red meet, because of Andy’s need for some contraband. When Andy decides to help Captain Hadley and Warden Norton he has reached the stage of “Crossing the Threshold.” He has realized that by helping them, he would be able to devise a plan of escape. Just as in any other prison. Andy faces tests, encounters allies, and is confronted by enemies. The “Tests, Allies, Enemies” stage happens all throughout the movie when Andy runs across new people who either prove to be his friends or enemies.
Andy’s “Approach to the Inmost Cave” occurs when he starts working for the Warden and starts taking the necessary steps to reach his goal. The “Ordeal” takes place once Andy has officially committed to his escape. He leaves behind the certain things for the Warden to find and starts on his way out of the prison. Seemingly his “Reward” was his successful escape from the prison. Although he had to crawl 500 yards down the sewage pipe, he was successful in freeing himself from the prison.
The “Road Back” for Andy proved to be quite enjoyable. Because of the crooked work done by the Warden and the scheming that Andy had done, Andy was able to go the bank after his escape and receive $370,000 out of the Warden’s accounts. Andy’s “Resurrection” happened as he was able to move to Mexico with all the money and start living his life again. But when he was back in the prison, Andy had told Red that if he ever got out of prison to meet him in Mexico. So Andy’s “Return with the Elixir” would have to be at the end of the movie when Red comes walking down the Mexican beach to meet him. This would definitely Andy’s final reward.

First Exam/ Part 3/ Top Design Challenge

First Exam/ Part 3
Top Design Challenge

For this design challenge I decided to design my room as a reading center for young adults. This room could be put into a high school setting or even used as part of a public library. I have always enjoyed reading myself, and I want to teach high school English as well. I want to create somewhere were my students can go to relax and really enjoy reading. For many children reading can be like a chore. Hopefully in this room it will become a privilege.
Wall Color: I picked two colors from Sherwin-Williams. I want the bottom half of the wall to be painted " Major Blue". The top half of the wall will be painted "Fun Yellow". There won’t be a flat line that divides the two colors. The blue will be painted in a wave pattern across the wall.
There will be a large sandy colored rug that covers the floor. Along with the wall coloring, there will one full wall covered in book shelves. These shelves will be made out of cheap wood and then they will be painted. There will be two large floor lamps that give off relativity bright light. My seating arrangement is going to consist of lawn and beach chairs. These chairs will be the kind you wouldn’t mind to leave behind after a week at the beach. There will also be a small white picnic table. I plan on purchasing a small Igloo water cooler and keeping it filled with lemonade or water, so there will be a few options for refreshments. I am going to get a piece of white marker board and shape it into the shape of a surfboard. This board will be used as the writing center. Here students will be able to write down their favorite books and recommend authors to others.
I have designed this room to resemble a fun day at the beach. I love to sit on the water line with my favorite book in hand. So I decided that others would probably like to do the same.

First Exam/ Part 2/ Art Vocabulary Game

First Exam/ Part 2
Art Vocabulary Game

My game that I have created is a version of Hangman. The class will be split into four or five groups depending on the class size. Once the groups are settled, I will put up blanks that represent a phrase of term that we have covered. One at a time each group will get to guess a letter. If the guessed letter is a correct guess I will place that letter in its appropriate spot. If the guess was wrong a body part will be added to our "Hangman". If the group guesses correctly they get to continue until they guess incorrectly. Once the phrase or term is completed, points will be handed out to the winning group, but it isn’t over there. Here a little bit of trivia comes into play. To win the full amount of points the group members will then individually have to give a definition, example, or a piece of related material that corresponds with the phrase or term. To win the full ten points for the completed phrase or term every member has to answer the trivia question correctly for that particular turn.
Scoring: Every phrase or term used is worth 15 points total. If the phrase or term is completed correctly that group receives five points. If the trivia portion is all answered correctly the group receives ten points. But if the trivia is incorrectly answered the group only gets the five points.

The list of phrases and term:
art, design, craft, quality, creativity, originality, talent, media, techniques, styles, genres, issues, contexts, isms, periods, civilizations, artist, form, imagination, inspiration, nature, perfection, performing arts, paintings, sculpture, architecture, literature, music, theater, film, dance, focal point, line, color, shape, space, texture, perspective, pattern, rhythm, dynamic, intensity, unity, variety, contrast, scale, proportion, symmetry, asymmetry, comparative, 2-D, 3-D, myth, humanism, abstract, allegory, symbols, and signs

Believe it or not, Southern Ohio hosts many art functions that may not be taken advantage by the local people. There are a few museums and an outstanding performance center located in this region. The Paramount Arts Center is located in Ashland, Kentucky. Although this center is not found in Ohio, many Ohioans make the trip to attend the events that are held at the Paramount.
The Paramount Theater, originally designed and built to show motion pictures, has provided an intimate venue for a variety of performances since it first opened in 1931. The vision for the theater is to create a cultural environment that reaffirms the area’s Appalachian tradition. The Paramount offers the best of the performing arts to its guests.
The calendar for the Paramount has some very interesting performances coming up. One of the most anticipated events is Backstage Players Production of Disney’s High School Musical. This production is a cover of Disney Channel’s smash hit movie musical. This movie is being brought to life on the Paramount’s stage.
This full length stage musical runs approximately two hours with an intermission. It contains songs from the Disney Channel movie soundtrack. The show will be performed on Thursday March 8, 2007, at 7:00 p.m, Friday March 9, 2007, at 7:00 p.m.; and Saturday March 10, 2007, at 7:00 p.m..
This musical will draw a large crowd based on the fact that it appeals to the younger and older generation. High School Musical, the movie, proved that it attracted young people to become interested in the performing arts, which is always a plus.

Art Review #2

Art Review #2
Whitney Hale
Fine Art 10503

Sculpture is defined as being the art of carving, welding, modeling, or otherwise producing figurative or abstract works of art. When one usually thinks of sculpture, he or she usually think about a large stone piece or something carved out of something else. As I was looking for a piece of sculpture to review, I ran along something very interesting. I found a liquid sculpture artist named Martin Waugh. I was really intrigued by his work and chose to take a closer look at the piece titled “Big Wet One Red”.
Liquid sculpture is a technique that is really unique. The art shown on the website are high resolution photographs of liquid in motion, captured with high speed flash photography. What is seen in the picture is exactly what nature created; the shapes and composition are not altered. The “Big Wet One Red” is a wonderful example at how challenging and un-controlling this process must be. This particular sculpture piece is shown in 1800x1200 px. Martin Waugh combines art and science to capture nature’s infinite beauty. He has always been intrigued by water.
The “Big Wet One Red” is a very colorful piece of sculpture. The large red lips are placed slightly off center to the right and claim the right to be called this piece’s focal point. The lips are a vibrant red that have small splashes coming off the lips. It looks as if someone who had on way too much lipstick puckered up and left behind their trade mark. Aside from the bright red lips, the sculpture has a light and airy feel about it. The remainder of the piece contains soft yellows, blues, and pinks. I think that since this sculpture is completely letting nature do its thing that the shape that was created here is something very interesting as well.
My interpretation of this sculpture goes mainly hand-in-hand with the most revealing title that Waugh placed on it. Unlike some works where the title can be misleading or slightly confusing, I think that “Big Wet One Red” was an excellent choice for this sculpture. To me the lips look like they belong to a woman who is excited about something. Red lipstick usually means excitement and passion. I liked that these lips are red, because it lets the imagination run wild thinking about where these lips are going and what these lips are going to do.
I know sculpture can be a narrow subject to look at sometimes, but I was able to find something completely new to me. There were many pieces of this liquid sculpture that I found fascinating, but I was completely taken back by “Big Wet One Red”. I think it was the level of fantasy that the red lips allowed the viewer to have.

Nature

Art as a whole is so interesting and is vital to our society. The nature aspect of art adds its own spark to the art category. Nature is one of the last wonders in the world that hasn't been taken over and completely changed by man. Nature serves as a great source of inspiration for artists for this reason. I'm sure that capturing nature as artwork is absolutely gratifying, because for that period of time you may allow yourself to join nature. It is one thing to draw a picture from imagination, but to be able to depict a true piece of art work, a piece of nature art, is incredible.

Art Review #1

Art Review #1
Whitney Hale
Fine Arts 10503

Just by reading the title of this particular piece of art, I was intrigued and wanted to take a closer look at the work. I chose a piece by Alice Neel titled After the Death of the Child. This certain piece is a watercolor done on paper. Neel worked on this piece during 1927 and 1928. This art work measures 11 ¾ X 8 ¾ inches and is part of a private collection in New York. As an artist, Neel kept most of her work out of reach of any type of audience. Her work has often been called risk-tasking. By knowing the basic details of this piece of art, one would think that an interpretation would be easy to conclude, but I feel that the title may lead to an interesting conclusion.
From first glance, my eyes were directly drawn to a large black tree placed in the middle of the picture. There is definitely a clear distinction in the use of color in this art piece. It almost seems like Neel separated the piece by using color in half and blacks and grays in the other half. On the half that is black and gray, there is a man standing beneath the large tree. There are also other people placed throughout the dark side of the picture. The man standing by the tree is the only man that has a face showing.
On the other half of this art work, color is used. The ground has a light green tint. There is a playground setting here also. There is a slide and swing set fenced in. Children are playing on the equipment. There are four children, and they are dressed in blues and oranges. Also on this half, there are two tall buildings behind the playground area. The perspective of the background is considered atmospheric. The sky is consisted of white and gray colors.
Aside from the basic appearances of this piece of art being unique, I think that the meaning behind it is also unique. The title of this piece immediately raised interests in me. Considering that the title is “After the Death of the Child” and the picture is laid out how it is, I think that the issue of irony comes into play with my interpretation. Irony is when the meaning conveyed in the picture is different from the actual literal meaning.
I believe that Neel placed a child’s playground in this painting for a very serious reason. When considering the title, the presence of the playground and the separation of color, leads me to think that a death has taken place and the man has to deal with it. Not only is the acceptance of death being undergone, but this man is being forced to also deal with having to be around other children. These children are portrayed as being playful and alive; unlike the child who has obviously placed away.
I think that the other side of this piece art is portraying death. Not only are the figures all dressed in black and only one of them shows a face, but the large black tree is present. The tree represents the ugly side, because it has no life on it and is bare.
As a whole, I found Neel’s piece very effective in relying a message to me personally. Although there were several factors present I definitely got the feel of someone having to accept a loss and being forced to move on. For anyone, accepting someone’s death is very difficult and challenging, but in the case of a child it would be intensified greatly, I would imagine. Although there was a somber feel to this particular art piece, I liked the ways the artist used contrasting images and emotions to reach her point.

Whitney Hale

1. Myself: particular, hardworking, loving
2. My Rules for Life: to always keep my priorities in order, to always cherish and appreciate those who love and care about me, and to never take life for granted
3. My Favorite Media: film- Terms of Endearment, song- Thank You for Loving Me by Bon Jovi,
4. Three People I Love: My Mother, My Grandpa, and My Boyfriend, but of course I love my whole family equally.
5. My Goals: to become an excellent teacher who inspires her students to fulfill their own dreams, to have a wonderful, loving family of my own, and to be a positive role model for
someone.

My Passions and Frustations

As I was doing this assignment, I realized that I could write and write on for hours for both of these lists; but here are just a few of my passions and frustrations. Passions: reading, cuddling, being with my family and friends, babies period, taking pictures, being at the beach, falling asleep listening to the rain, working with children, watching the cooking channel, and watching chic flicks. Frustrations: dishonesty, being interrupted, being late, suffering from technology problems, when someone backs out of set plans, having dirty tennis shoes, irresponsibility, remote channel flippers, letting myself procrastinate, and letting my emotions get the best of me.

My Definition of Art

Art to me is anything that is made, performed, or interpreted by someone that reflects emotions and feelings to an audience or even just for personal use.

Similar Mind test results

I took a Jung Personality Test an the Similiar Minds website. These were my results:

Extroverted (E) 70.83% Introverted (I) 29.17%Sensing (S) 62.5% Intuitive (N) 37.5%Feeling (F) 62.5% Thinking (T) 37.5%Judging (J) 83.33% Perceiving (P) 16.67%Your type is: ESFJ

I also took a Big Five Test on the same website. These were those results:

Extroversion 67%
Orderliness 78%
Emotional Stability 38%
Accommodation 75%
Inquisitiveness 41%

Here are your results on each dimension:
Extroversion results were moderately high which suggests you are, at times, overly talkative, outgoing, sociable and interacting at the expense of developing your own individual interests and internally based identity.
Orderliness results were high which suggests you are overly organized, neat, structured and restrained at the expense too often of flexibility, variety, spontaneity, and fun.
Emotional Stability results were moderately low which suggests you are worrying, insecure, emotional, and anxious.
Accommodation results were high which suggests you are overly kind natured, trusting, and helpful at the expense too often of your own individual development (martyr complex).
Inquisitiveness results were moderately low which suggests you are, at times, overly small minded, traditional, and conventional at the expense of intellectual curiousity, possibility, and progress

I enjoy taking these types of quizzes, but I think it is hard to base your perception of how you truly are based on the answers from a few of these tests. It is fun just to see what the results say you are though.
